Libra Solar Eclipse: Shining a Light in the Dark

Today is the big day—a Solar Eclipse at 10° in Libra. Not only is this the last eclipse of 2024, but it’s also the final one in Libra until 2033. If you have strong Libra placements or significant Cardinal sign energies (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), you’re likely feeling this energy intensely. With so many planets and points gathered in Libra right now—the Sun, Moon, Black Moon Lilith, the South Node, and Mercury—it’s hard not to feel the cosmic intensity!

The days leading up to this eclipse have been particularly shadowy, with uncomfortable emotions, thoughts, and interactions surfacing. As someone with four Libra placements, including my Sun, I’ve been deep in my own shadow work. Honestly, I almost didn’t send this newsletter—I’ve been battling the urge to retreat. But it’s important to my heart to share some of my thoughts on this week’s astrology, even if I’m stumbling through the process. So, thank you for bearing with me as I navigate this energy alongside you.

As I mentioned last week, leading up to today’s Solar Eclipse, the Sun, Mercury, and Black Moon Lilith all crossed the South Node in Libra, and we experienced a Sun-Mercury cazimi. This brought greater awareness and enhanced illumination of our hidden desires, fears, and insecurities—things we usually keep in the dark. We’re being shown where we might be self-sabotaging or allowing our shadows to dominate, affecting our relationships and communications. With Black Moon Lilith in the mix, the shadow has felt even more intense, as Lilith urges us to confront the primal parts of ourselves we usually repress or feel shame around.

Venus, the planetary ruler of this eclipse, is currently in Scorpio, adding another layer of intensity. Venus in Scorpio brings a desire to uncover what’s hidden, but through those unveilings, we have a powerful opportunity for deeper emotional bonding and transformation within relationships.

The Moon’s Nodes—aka the Nodes of Fate—are fateful, karmic points in the chart, always activated during eclipses. The North Node brings in new energy, while the South Node shows where we need to let go. Though today’s Solar Eclipse is technically a New Moon, the involvement of the South Node makes it a time of release.

Since July 2023, the Nodes have been transiting the Aries-Libra axis, encouraging us to step more fully into our independence and reclaim our authority (North Node in Aries), while revealing where we have sacrificed ourselves too much for the sake of peace or connection (South Node in Libra). The eclipses in Aries and Libra during this cycle have been pushing us to confront these imbalances, especially in how we relate to others. This eclipse marks the final Libra eclipse in this cycle, though we will have one last Solar Eclipse in Aries next March before these themes fully close out.

The themes surfacing now are things we've likely been dealing with since 2023, and over the next few months, we’ll continue closing chapters and shedding what no longer serves us in these realms. Soon, our focus will shift to the Virgo-Pisces axis, themes we got a glimpse of during last month’s Pisces Lunar Eclipse.

Letting go isn’t easy. The South Node clings to the past and the comfort of old, familiar ways of operating, even when it no longer serves us. But today’s South Node eclipse highlights the areas that are still out of balance. Since this eclipse occurs in Libra, the sign of the scales, it's about weighing things out and trying to bring things into better harmony—whether that’s in relationships or within ourselves.

Adding to this eclipse's emotional charge is Mars in Cancer, squaring the eclipse, bringing up issues around home, family, and security. However, Mars is also trining Saturn retrograde in Pisces, which provides some stability and boundaries, reminding us of recent karmic lessons we don't wish to repeat. Together with Venus in Scorpio, this forms a Water Grand Trine, supporting our emotional growth and intuition over the next few days. This configuration can help us better harmonize our masculine (Mars) and feminine (Venus) energies, tuning into what we truly want on a soul level.

We also have Jupiter in Gemini forming a sextile with Chiron retrograde in Aries, in play all of October. Jupiter's expansive, growth-oriented energy, particularly focused on communication and learning during its transit through Gemini, is offering an opportunity for deeper healing. This aspect encourages us to confront the wounds and insecurities we carry in the Aries-ruled areas of our charts, where the North Node is—where we've been pushing ourselves to take bold, decisive action. This alignment supports us in transforming our vulnerabilities into strengths, empowering us to move forward with greater confidence in the areas we feel passionate about.

All in all, this particular eclipse can feel heavy as it illuminates things we might not want to see. But when we sit in the discomfort of the shadow, we pave the way for a brighter light to emerge. We all carry both light and dark, and the relationships we have—with people, places, or things—mirror that duality. Embracing both is what makes us human. Denying our darkness or striving to be all light all the time is never fully authentic—and it’s exhausting to keep up! I've found relief in getting better about sharing more of my darker parts with those I trust, without guilt or shame. The fear around that is real, but it’s vulnerable to speak light into the shadow. Kudos to you if you’ve been working on doing the same!

One last thing I want to mention, because it comes up a lot: you don’t have to do anything special during an eclipse. Some people like to manifest, journal, or do releasing rituals, and while I find journaling and rituals helpful, I don’t feel strongly about needing to “do” something specific. Eclipses are portals of fate—times when things are beyond our control. You can set intentions, but often the universe has its own plans, and it’s best to surrender and let fate play out. This doesn’t mean being passive, but rather releasing rigid expectations of what you want the eclipse to bring.

If you do feel called to journal, here are some prompts I’m working with during this eclipse:

  • What are three habits I’m ready to let go of today that no longer serve me?

  • What relationship(s) need my attention to restore balance and harmony?

  • In what ways have I become better and braver in my communication with others over the past 18 months?

  • Where am I still hiding or repressing parts of myself that are yearning to be seen?

  • How can I reveal more of my hidden parts in a way that feels safe and honors my authenticity?

I’m sending you love and support during these shadowy, emotionally charged times. If you need cosmic guidance, I’m here for you.
